Struisbaai Secrets

Struisbaai is known for its thriving fishing community, which includes numerous boats that have been in the business for many generations. The harbour pier is a favorite spot for anglers of all ages.

Struisbaai hides the longest stretch of beach in the Southern Hemisphere (14km). Just a short walk from the apartment is a natural white sandy beach stretching all the way in the direction of Arniston.

Wake-up to the friendly buzz of the local farmers market on Saturday mornings. Fruit, vegetables, a variety of firewood, and even fresh pancakes are traded fairly until lunchtime.

The fauna and flora of Struisbaai is unique with a rich selection of local varieties from Paintbrush Lilies (above) to proteas and sun birds. The 2-hour Spookdraai moderate hiking trail is a must do for enthusiasts.

Must-see Attractions

The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was the third lighthouse to be built in South Africa in 1849. It was originally fuelled by the tail fat of local sheep. The building was declared a heritage site in 1973.

The Iconic 3D Map of Africa Monument is hand-sculpted out of concrete. The southernmost tip of Africa is only a 2-minute walk away and it is where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet.

South Africa has approximately 150 shipwrecks that dot its coastline and most are around L'Agulhas. Meisho Maru (above) was shipwrecked in November 1982 and is a short drive away.

The Kassiebaai National Heritage Site is a 45-minute drive to Arniston. The white style houses and heritage are still preserved in their original style and colour. The traditional food is delicious.

Wining and Dining

The Catch Cook Restaurant is situated at the Struisbaai Harbour serving the ‘catch of the day’ amongst other treats. The restaurant is relaxed and has a friendly atmosphere.

If you are planning a fish menu for the apartment’s indoor braai, then ‘Fish and more’ is a popular 1st choice for fresh Yellowtail or Tuna. It’s delicious coffee, cake, and ice cream are favourites too.

L'Agulhas Seafoods is a must for battered fish and chips take-outs. Sashimi, sushi, local wine, or a cool beer can also be enjoyed either upstairs or downstairs in the restaurant.

There are variety of coastal wines on offer in the area- Black Oyster Catcher, Stranveld, or Zoetendal Vineyards. Vindigo 108 store (above), outside Napier, also stocks most of the local wines.

Shopping and Facilities

Nanna’s thrift store provides quality items for people of all incomes including clothing, toys, books, home décor, and more. Also a favourite choice for nostalgic keepsakes to take back home.

The Struisbaai Pharmacy is down stairs from the apartment and caters for any unplanned aches or pains. The professional staff are helpful and will refer you to a local doctor for more serious ailments.

If you are starting a fishing hobby or an experienced fisherman looking for the inside track on Struisbaai surf, the Angling Shop has you covered with a variety of equipment and advise.

And then there’s Cape Agulhas Fishing Charters for the hardcore fishing enthusiast. Possible catches are- Southern yellowtail amberjack, Geelbeck croaker, Bluefish, and Sooty grunter.

  • In-Season- 1 Apr to 11 Apr, 24 Jun to 17 Jul, 30 Sep to 11 Oct, 14 Dec to 14 Jan
  • In-Season rate- R1,750 per night, 1-6 people
  • Out-Season rate- R1,450 per night, 1-6 people
  • T&C's- max 6x people (4x beds, 2x couches), no pets, non-smoking
